While not advised, there is a way to turn off emergency alerts on android. America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response (or AMBER) alert is one of the wireless emergency broadcasts that are pushed to phones, but not everyone wants to receive these alerts as it might be a trigger for a past traumatic experience. Alongside AMBER Alerts, other life-saving alerts that are pushed to users’ phones include weather alerts that warn about severe weather conditions such as floods, tornados or hurricanes.

When an emergency alert comes in, the user’s phone lets out a loud sound like an alarm. In some cases, the phone may vibrate to inform the user they have an emergency. Despite this inconvenience, an emergency alert can be the difference between life and death for recipients.

Google has made it possible to Turn off AMBER alerts on an Android smartphone, and it is a straightforward process even though Android phones differ from brand to brand. To turn off the feature, open the ‘Settings’ app and go to ‘Apps and Notifications.’ Scroll down and select ‘Wireless emergency alerts.’ It should open a page that lists all of the emergency alerts with a toggle in front of them. Switch the toggle in front or AMBER alerts off. This should prevent future notifications from coming in. Another way is to simply search for ‘Wireless emergency alerts’ under the Settings app. Tap it when it appears in the search results, and it should open the emergency alerts menu.

Other Alerts Can Be Turned Off Too

AMBER alerts are not the only alerts one can turn off from this settings menu too. All a user has to do is disable the toggle in front of any alert they wish to turn off. However, it is important to note that not all alerts can be turned off. For example, presidential alerts which are issued directly by the President of the United States can’t be turned off from the ‘Wireless emergency alerts’ menu. In addition, unlike other alerts sent to users in a particular geographical area, Presidential Alerts are usually sent nationwide.

Despite the usefulness of emergency alerts, not every country uses them. So even though Wireless emergency alerts are turned on on a phone, there is a chance a user has never received one on their device before. However, these countries may use other means of informing citizens about emergencies, such as radio or TV broadcasts.
