Fibroids are noncancerous tumors caused due to genetic factors, obesity, or hormones like oestrogens. This condition is common in women of childbearing age. Study shows that 70% of women by age 50 will develop this condition. It does not affect women who reach menopause as the production of these hormones will be less in them.
Fibroids may be symptomatic or asymptomatic. One in four women may be symptomatic. In symptomatic women, these fibroids do not cause life-threatening complications but they may cause infertility, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain during periods, a dragging sensation in the lower abdomen, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, lower backache, and constipation depending on the size and location of the fibroids. It can also cause placental abruption, fetal growth restriction, and preterm delivery.
There is a misconception among people about conceiving after the surgical removal of fibroids (Myomectomy). The chances of getting pregnant after a single myomectomy are around 34%. But several cases have proved that it’s possible to get pregnant and deliver a healthy baby after undergoing a myomectomy twice. There are chances for even a woman after 40 years of age to conceive after a myomectomy. The symptomatic woman who does not desire future fertility can undergo a hysterectomy. It is a procedure of complete removal of the uterus.

Open surgery is the best for complete removal of fibroids is one of the myths among people. But it is contrary as the fibroids can be seen four times more clearly during the laparoscopy technique. Doctors also advice to do tubal patency test after 3 months of surgery to check the condition of the fallopian tube. The signs of pregnancy after myomectomy is like the normal signs of pregnancy, that is missing your period, feeling nauseous or light – headed etc. The uterus takes a maximum of 3 to 6 months to heal and doctors’ advice to get pregnant after this period .
