We rounded up the best fall makeup trends 2022 will bring and share breakdowns of all the looks below. jump fall can’t come soon enough.

Meet the expert

  • Charlie Riddle is a makeup artist and the global beauty director for Stila Cosmetics. Riddle was the key makeup artist for Kim Shui FW22 and Bronx and Banco Fall 2022.

What are the makeup trends for 2022?

The spring 2022 runways were full of glitter, metallics, bright color, winged eyes, and graphic lines, and guess what? All those trends will be sticking around for fall 2022, according to looks from the fashion week runways. Told you not to expect typical fall makeup. One of the biggest trends for the season is an unexpected light blue. “I think, definitely, will be seeing color of the year, periwinkle, as a way to wear blue eyeshadow and wear it well,” says makeup artist Charlie Riddle. “It’s one of those colors that’s so flattering on all skin tones. It also plays really well with all the pastels that were shown on the runway.”

If you prefer something a little bolder than pastels, you’ll be happy to know that moody metallic looks will be just as popular. “Also, cool-tone silver and black smokey eyes,” Riddle says, adding that overall, fall 2022 will feature fewer bronzes in favor of other metallics, like silver, and the intensity of black “to really make the eyes sultry.”

1

Bright-Blue Eyes for Fall 2022

This photo right here single-handedly convinced me to try bright-blue statement eyeshadow. To get that diffused edge like the models at Kim Shui wore, apply the liquid eyeshadow where you want the boldest color, then use a small fluffy makeup brush to soften and blend it out

How to DIY It: This Liquid Eyeshadow

Stila Double Dip Suede Shade & Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadows in Blue Jean

If you could only try one product to recreate the look above, make it this double-ended liquid eyeshadow that Riddle used on the models† One side has a matte finish, the other has a shimmer, and both have a doe-foot wand that makes it easy to apply, even for a beginner.

3

Glossy Lips for Fall 2022

Can I hear a little commotion for the pink-and-silver shimmery eyes?! Now, let’s hear it for the shiny lips! This whole look that Riddle created for Bronx and Banco is A Look and one I’ll be wearing every Friday night come fall, TYVM. If you don’t know what’s the best lip to wear with bold eyeshadowpull this photo for reference.

4

How to DIY It: This Lip Gloss

Stila Plumping Lip Glaze in Prosecco

To give the models shiny, plump lips like the ones above, Riddle used this lip gloss in a sheer peachy shade to enhance the natural lip color without looking too overdone or makeup-y. Just pure, glossy shine.

5

Pops of Color for Fall 2022

Just as Riddle said, black smokey eyes are one trend to look out for come fall 2022. Makeup artist Diane Kendal’s unique take on the smudged look for the Jason Wu Fall 2022 show also featured an unexpected swipe of yellow on the inner corners.

How to DIY It: This Black Eyeliner

Jason Wu Beauty The Kitty Dual End Eyeliner in Intense Black

This double-ended liner has a liquid liner on one side and a pencil on the other. For this look, you’ll want to use that pencil side to line the lashesfollowed by a blending brush to smudge it out.

7

Blue Winged Eyes for Fall 2022

blue again? Love to see it. And we especially loved the pastel blue winged eyes at Christian Siriano. Instead of a black liquid liner to create the cat-eye at the base of the lashes, makeup artist Sofia Tilbury used a navy blue liner that paired perfectly with the periwinkle

If you want to try your hand at the winged eye above, grab yourself this metallic blue pencil and a baby blue cream eyeshadow, and give yourself a lot of time to perfect it. Wings that symmetrical don’t come easy, y’all.

9

Graphic Eyeliner for Fall 2022

My toxic trait is thinking I could do lines this clean and sharp on the first try. But, hey, that’s what makeup remover is for. Skip the eyeshadow and mascara and go straight for the black pencil eyeliner to create your version of this graphic winged eye by Pat McGrath for Anna Sui FW22.

How to DIY It: This Black Eyeliner

Pat McGraths Labs PermaGel Eyeliner Pencil

Yup, this is the black pencil eyeliner I’m talking about. The gel liner tip allows it to glide like butter without tugging or skipping and the pigment is so rich you won’t have to retrace your shapes—all of which is crucial when creating precise lines like the ones above.

11

Red Cut Crease for Fall 2022

I meannnn† Is this winged eye with a red cut crease by Sheika Daley for the LaQuan Smith FW22 show everything or is it everything? (Answer: It is, in fact, everything). The bright red feels classic fall but the use of the color keeps things interesting.

12

How to DIY It: This Red Liner

MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry

Instead of starting with eyeshadow all over the lid and carving the crease with concealer, this look features a swipe of red lip liner (like the one shown here) across the middle of the eyelid that melds into the dramatic winged liner.

13

Smokey Eyes for Fall 2022

Makeup artist Dick Page gave the models at Michael Kors super-bold, super-smoky eyes, and now I want to give myself the same. To get that diffused line and help it stay in place, top your smudged liner with black or gray eyeshadow, kinda like a setting powder.

14

How to DIY It: This Eyeshadow Palette

Reina Rebelde Wet Dry Eyeshadow in Tapatía

If you’re too timid to go all out with the black eyeliner and shadow, this quad palette comes with all the colors you need to create dimension in your smokey eyesoften the overall look, and make it a little more wearable.

15

Fluttery Lashes for Fall 2022

No matter how great your mascara is, sometimes a false lash is the difference between voluminous eyelashes and va-va-voom eyelashes† The looks on the models at the Brandon Maxwell fall/winter 2022 show were definitely the latter.

Red Lips and Smokey Eyes for Fall 2022

Some models at Michael Kors also wore red lips with their smokey eyes and defied all those dated beauty rules that say to choose one or the other. Classics are hardly trends, but this modern take on a smokey eye and red lip combo makes the list for anyone who likes what they like but wants to change things up ever so slightly each season.
